It is the Skagen Rose

The Skagen Rose

In the Skagen dune plantation, an authentic natural phenomenon grows. The story of the Skagen Rose is reminiscent in many ways of HC Andersen's enchanting tale of "The Ugly Duckling". Because in reality the Skagen rose is not a rose at all. Here you get the special story about the enchanting plant far to the north, which for centuries has adorned the living rooms of the ladies of Skagen and now creates special memories for tourists with a love for Skagen.

Actually a species of willow

If you have visited the heath in Skagen during the blue hour, when the evening red of the sunset envelops Skagen in a beautiful red glow over the city, you already know that the atmosphere is completely magical. Every summer, gray rice and creeping willow bloom on the Skaw heath.

In the top shoot of the arrow, the wasps stop laying their eggs. And when the eggs hatch and the little larvae arrive, they start eating the top shoot. In this process, they form galls, which affect the leaves and curl them in a wonderful way, so that in the end they come to look like a tiny, fine rose.

All spring and summer the Skagen rose is green, but in autumn the natural phenomenon dries up, leaving behind what we know as the Skagen rose. A rose that is in its subtlety a willow species and in truth a magical transformation.

In the old Skagen homes

The dried Skagen rose has been popular in decorations among the ladies of Skagen for centuries, also in bridal bouquets. Today, they constitute a very special luxury souvenir with many memories of lovely moments in Skagen, which are brought to life all year round when you look at your piece of jewellery.
